Deutsche Bank reported the encouraging news that in the last six months, over $200 billion has been pledged and 250 new regulatory initiatives instigated by the US, China and EU governments in support of climate change action. This tallies with our own findings that regulation is being welcomed by many brands justifying sustainable investments as discussed in last month’s issue.
 
New UK regulations include the Carbon Reduction Commitment (effective April 2010) requiring corporate and public-sector bodies to join the carbon-trading scheme, report on their carbon emissions and purchase carbon credits against future emissions. The government also plans to install energy smart meters to every home and business by 2020. Over stateside, much has been written on Obama’s first 100 days. From an environmental point of view, his plans include: funding for renewable energy; allocating $13 billion to build a high speed rail corridor and a Cap & Trade proposal.  If you, like 76% of Americans, don’t know what Cap and Trade means, check out Ecogeek. Sustainable packaging remains in the spotlight for big brands: Coca-Cola has introduced the PlantBottle, a fully recyclable plastic bottle made partially from plant material;  whilst Pepsico’s Frito Lay claims the first biodegradable crisp pack due for launch on Earth Day next year. Here at Added Value we’re delighted with 3M’s announcement that Post-it Notes have been certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and we’ll be switching to these in our workshops
